Our Past

Gorey Hockey club was started in 1980 with the help of PJ Nolan, and was known then as Gorey Ladies Hockey Club . They played their home games in the Loreto School in Gorey on the shale pitch as it was then.

(There was a men's team that played at the same location, but they were separate & known as South East Wanderers).

The Ladies played in the Southeast League up until 2017/18 when they moved into the Ladies Leinster League starting in Division 12. Within the Southeast they played against Carlow, Enniscorthy, Kilkenny & Wexford, in the league & cup competitions for more than 30 years.

Over the years the club has put forward players to represent the SouthEast team at the Interpros along with the other clubs mentioned above, where they competed against Leinster, Munster, Connacht & Ulster. For such a small region with only a few clubs, the SouthEast have had a number of successful years coming second a number of times in Leinster.

The ladies started a junior section in 2008, and a few years later the club was then renamed Gorey Hockey Club. With the introduction of the junior section a few more parents got involved and a second team was started, but unfortunately this had to pulled back to one team.

Many of the players who started the junior section passed on their knowledge of hockey as they were the main coach's to the junior club.

The club's junior section has consistently grown every year to date where we have over 100 girls & boys playing hockey from the ages of 6 to 16. Some of those juniors starting at the beginning are now starting to filter in to play with the senior team.

The senior team are currently playing there home games at the Astro Active in Enniscorthy, with an occasional game being played at the East Glendalough School in Wicklow, due to a shortage of availability in Enniscorthy.

The ladies have used a number of indoor halls for training around Gorey, but are currently training once a week in Enninscorthy.

The junior section started there training at the Showgrounds in Gorey, from there they moved for a number of years to the shale pitch at Courtown Hibs, currently training at the indoor Craanford Hall on long pile artificial grass surface, and once a month down at the Astro in Enniscorthy.
