Skerries v Gorey

Saturday last saw Gorey travel to Skerries in the midst of Storm Brian.

Due to excess water on the pitch at arrival the Match was delayed by 30 minutes while Skerries' groundsmen went to work.

After a swift indoor warm up, the game got underway with Lynne Copeland travelling into Skerries circle winning the First Penalty Corner of the match. Gorey pressurized well but their first shot on goal went narrowly wide of the post.

As the rain subsided Skerries settled and made a number of attacks on Gorey's goal. A free out for obstruction was awarded to Gorey's Ruth Kenny. This broke down Skerries attack and from here Gorey took hold of the game. Through Gorey's persistent front line made up of Sarah Merrigan, Lynne Copeland, Claire Swords and senior debutant Muireann Deegan won a number of short corners. Each shot agonizingly missed the target. 

Gorey dominated midfield with Nicola Ryan and Robin Swords making use of the space out wide forcing Skerries defense work hard.
Before half time Skerries made some changes to try stop Gorey's strong passing play.

On the stroke of the half-time, Gorey won one more short corner. A clever switch of the ball to the back post almost paid off however Gorey's chance went wide one more time.
Somehow it was Nil - Nil at half-time.

With the restart came the Rain once more.
Gorey continued to apply the pressure and was rewarded with a string of penalty corners but failed to capitalise.
A well timed tackle by Nicola Ryan won the ball at halfway. Creating space out on her wing to run, Nicola passed the ball inside to Lynne Copeland who in turn passed to Sarah Merrigan. Determined to make it count Sarah drilled the ball into Skerries right corner . GOAL !!(1-0)

Fresh legs from Skerries bench, put a series of good passes together utilizing their wings. Skerries ran at Gorey's defense made up of Bridget Kenny, Vicky Hughes, Ruth Kenny and Imogen McGuinness intercepting a lot of ball frustrating Skerries sideline support.
Gorey's defense made it difficult for Skerries to penetrate but Skerries resolve was finally rewarded with 3 consecutive short corners with a number of long corners conceded. Goalie Fiona Mythen made numerous crucial saves protecting Gorey's slim lead.

A hit out by Vicky Hughes to Ruth Kenny and Nicole Ryan sent the ball up the wing once more. Claire Swords was unlucky to connect with Nicola's precision cross. Pressure from Robin Swords won a free in for Gorey as she was on the receiving end of a high ball. 
In the final moments Lynne Copeland was painfully close to doubling Gorey's lead but was left wanting by a save from Skerries goalie.

Bray v Gorey

A beautiful Autumn Saturday saw Gorey Ladies Hockey travel to Loreto Bray to take on Bray 5ths.

Bray started the match quickly  winning consecutive corners in the opening quarter. Gorey's defense of Gillian Bailey, Bridget Kenny, Vicky Hughes, Imogen McGuinness held off Bray with Goalkeeper Fiona Mythen making a couple of crucial saves.

Gorey settled and shortly afterwards a timely run from our own winger Claire Swords broke the deadlock with a cracking strike from just inside the circle, 1-0 Gorey.

From here Gorey took control of the game. In the closing moments of the first half Gorey won a number of short corners but failed to convert any chances. Gorey continued to apply pressure sending the ball close to Bray's goal. Saves from Bray's Goalie kept them in touch. Gorey's attack lead by Lynne Copeland, Megan Roark-Shannon, Nicola Ryan entered Bray's circle once more where Claire Swords got on the end of a deflection making it 2 for Gorey.

Half Time

Half time came at the right time for Bray to regroup.

Bray started the 2nd half strong putting together a series of passing plays however midfielders Ailbhe Wheeler and Robin Swords dampened their spirits. Gorey were finally rewarded with a brace of short corners but were unlucky to take advantage. Gorey once again began to take command of Bray's circle. A perfectly weighted pass to Lyndsey Walters handed Gorey a 3-0 victory

There were more than one candidate for Player of the Match but central defender Gillian Bailey and goal scorer Claire Swords secure the honours.
